More Updates On Abduction

Posted on 14 November 2005 by Tim

Fox News:

An 18-year-old man charged with killing a couple and fleeing with their 14-year-old daughter has been captured in Indiana, police said.

David Ludwig, 18, was apprehended about 12:30 p.m. EST on Monday after a car he was driving crashed into a tree about 20 miles west of Indianapolis following a pursuit by State Police, 1st Sgt. Dave Bursten said.

“The car got into a little bit of an accident. … They are both OK,” Warwick Township Police Chief Rich Garipoli said.

The teens were handcuffed and taken away from the scene in Belleville, Ind., in separate cars. Ludwig is charged with two counts of homicide and kidnapping.

“This was premeditated,” Lancaster County District Attorney Donald Totaro said of the crimes committed over the past two days, which warrant life in prison

Police earlier had said the two were spotted at a gas station near exit 173 of Interstate 80. There were conflicting reports of whether or not the teens had changed their appearance, and a sandwich shop worker described Kara Beth Borden’s face as swollen, possibly indicating she had been crying, Lititz Police Chief William Seace said.

I guess disobeying parents isn’t as glamarous as you’d think?

Anyway…

The Borden incident had eerie similarities to the Charlie Starkweather/Caril Fugate case in 1958. Their murderous rampage ened only after nearly a dozen people died, and the question of Fugate’s “abduction” has never been settled definitively. Fortunately, this whole new chapter has ended without more bloodshed, and we’ll see justice unfold as more questions are answered.

This is so sad. And it’s even sadder( is that a word?) that she was disobeying her parents.

  3. MVB Says:

Well, we don’t know the whole story yet. Did he kidnap her against her will? Or did she run away with him? The latter seems most likely though.

  4. Matthew Clarke Says:

    Interesting blog you keep.

    MVB,
Good questions. He came into the house with a gun, killed the parents after an arguement…then what? Did you take the girl by force (he had a gun obviously)?

I would wonder–did she previously talk about her problems with her parents being against the relationship and perhaps the guy said “I’ll take care of it” and she really didn’t know what he meant?

I’ve checked out both of their blogs (the usual xanga/myspace thing) and it’s amazing to me to see “christian kids” on their sites. She labels herself as a chrisitan invloved with her youth group.

But things should play out today or tomorrow.

  6. MVB Says:

Well, the police arrested both of them, so the police obviously know more than we do about what really happened.

  7. Tim Says:

    Actually, she was not arrested.

    Fox reported:

“Warwick Township Chief Richard F. Garipoli Jr. said Kara will be considered a victim in the case — rather than a willing participant — “until I hear otherwise.”

“Kara’s upset. She’s crying. She’s a 14-year-old child and we seem to forget that,” Garipoli said. “She’s devastated. So it’s important that we do put her back with her family where she belongs.”

It has been confirmed that both of them were homeschooled. I had wondered about that.

  8. Tim Says:

Another interesting thing: she had a blog. It and Ludwig’s blog have both been shut down. Both had Xanga and MySpace.

    This blog has more.

  9. Tim Says:

Interestingly, Kara says she is 17 on her myspace.

  10. Tim Says:

Maybe I should be updating the post? But I won’t. Here is Ludwig’s blog: Haydren.. It’s scary, but it says a lot.

One last thing: His Interests: Rock climbing, hanging out with friends, computers, movies, swimming, volleyball, dirtbiking, playing cards, eating candy, spending money, traveling, pulling stupid pranks, having soft air gun wars, and various other things.
Expertise: Computers, volleyball, movies, getting in trouble :-p
    Occupation: Student
    Industry: Medical

    I don’t think he’ll be a medical student. Such a sad story.

[...] But I still can’t forget to think about all of those who seemingly have nothing to be thankful for this season. Some have lost it all. I think about the hurricane victims, and those who have experienced so much horror and disaster in their lives just in the last few months. I think about the Borten and Ludwig families. I think about a child who has lost his father or mother. I think of that man or woman with no family and no home. I think about that lost soul far away in another country looking out at the ocean and wondering if there is more to life. I think of that young child in Africa who is crying as his mother is lost to AIDS, and he is now an orphan with no home. [...]

[...] “It was an intentional murder, I intended to shoot them, and I did.” Those were the words of David Ludwig, 18-year-old killer from Lancaster County, PA. Ludwig confessed to the killings, saying he shot the parents after the father told him to stop seeing his daughter, according to the filing. Ludwig said he shot Michael Borden in the back as he was going down the hallway to the front door and then headed toward Cathryn Borden. [...]
